Discovery of a Subtype of Lung Cancer can Improve Treatment

Monday, August 16th, 2010

The Spanish Group of Lung Cancer (GECP) has discovered a new subtype of lung cancer that responds best to the application of a particular drug that traditional chemotherapy.

This has been explained to this group, consisting of 266 Spanish oncologists who have undergone study of more than 2,100 patients with lung cancer. The investigation shows that people who had EGFR gene mutation, and were treated with a specific drug, obtained a higher response rate.

This is the first large European study, which was published in The New England Journal of Medicine “and has performed in the laboratory of Molecular Biology Universiatario ICO-Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol in Badalona.

“The median survival for patients receiving the drug ‘erlotinib’ was between 14 and 27 months, almost a year longer than with traditional chemotherapy,” stated the GECP.

The gene called Factor Receptor (EGFR) is found naturally on the cell surface and its mutation occurs when there excessive activity, which can lead to uncontrolled cell division and increased predisposition to cancer.

Iron nanoparticles used to destroy cancerous tumors with laser

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

iron nano A team of researchers reported today that they have used tiny carbon capsules with iron, visible on the screen of a scanner to locate them precisely within the body and laser heated when they reach a tumor.

These carbon nanotubes with multiple layers that contain iron and are 10,000 times thinner than a human hair, described as a presentation today at the 52nd annual meeting of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, in Philadelphia.

In the laboratory scientists Baptist Medical Center Wake Forest University (North Carolina) used a scanner for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to follow the trajectory of the particles inside the living tissue.

When they saw that the particles were close to a tumor they fired a laser beam and the rapid warming on that scale so small destroyed the tumor.

The method is the development of experimental technique for cancer treatment known as laser induced thermal therapy (TTIL) which uses laser energy to heat and destroy tumors.

The TTIL works because certain nanoparticles can absorb the energy of a laser and convert it into heat. If the nanoparticles are struck by lightning while inside the tumor free energy of high temperature and kill cancer cells.

But there is a problem with the TTIL: the scanner that doctors use the tumor can be clearly seen, but the particles are not seen.

Once injected into the patient they can not be traced and can be dangerous for him: if the laser reaches the particles away from the tumor when heat can destroy healthy tissue. (more…)

Brussels Sprouts and Broccoli may Help Cancer Treatment

Monday, August 9th, 2010

A substance produced in the body when you eat broccoli and brussels sprouts may curb the proliferation of cancer cells and could be an effective supplement for treating some cancers and other diseases, according to a study.

The study, developed teams Ohio State University and the Research Institute Richard J. U.S. Solove, was published in the journal Cancer Prevention Reaserch.

The researchers found that the substance (indole-3-carbinol “or I3C) is related to a molecule (Cdc25A), which is essential for proliferation and cell division.

brocoli treat cancer

In particular, the I3C can destroy the Cdc25A, which is also a molecule that is present in high levels in breast, prostate, liver, esophagus, endometrium, and colon, and other diseases such as Alzheimer’s. (more…)

Experts warn of carcinogenic risk from UVA

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

UVA carcinogrnic

Although its use is increasingly widespread, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has decided to raise to the maximum level the risk to human health from the use of ultraviolet light booths.

The agency has included these devices in a risk category and qualifies as “carcinogenic to humans” according to a special issue of the British journal “The Lancet Oncology.

So far, the use of these cabins was part of group 2, which called it “possibly carcinogenic“.

Anemia Associated with Cancer

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

Many patients with cancer develop anemia. Under conditions of anemia, the body does not have enough red blood cells or hemoglobin definition to carry the proper amount of oxygen from the lungs to body tissues. Oxygen is essential for energy production by the organism that causes muscles and organs functioning properly. As a result of anemia, you may feel tired or weak.

The person with anemia may feel a great tiredness and exhaustion. This is a major problem for patients with cancer and that fatigue caused by anemia does not disappear, which may make them feel very ‘discouraged’ and less able to perform their daily activities. Doctors use the name of fatigue to refer to this condition. For more information click on fatigue.

Other symptoms of anemia include: (more…)

Factors – The Causes Of Cancer

Friday, June 4th, 2010

The Causes Of CancerCause of cancer usually can not be known for certain because the causes of cancer can be a combination of a set of factors, genetic and environmental. However there are several factors that allegedly increase the risk of cancer, as follows:

* Factor descent
Genetic factors cause some families are at higher risk for certain cancers when compared with other families. Type of cancer that tends to run in the family is breast cancer, ovarian cancer, skin cancer and colon cancer. For example, the cancer risk for women increased 1.5 s / d 3 times if his mother or sister had breast cancer.

* Environmental Factors
- Smoking cigarettes increases the risk of lung cancer – lung, mouth, larynx (vocal cords), and bladder.
- Ultraviolet rays from the sun
- Ionizing radiation (which is carcinogenic) is used in x-ray beam generated from nuclear power plants and atomic bombs that can reach very long distances. For example, people who survived the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II, a high risk of cancer of blood cells, such as leukemia. (more…)

What Causes Cancer?

Friday, March 26th, 2010

The cause of cancer remains a great mystery to medicine and this article can help us rethink what we thought we knew. Want to know more about possible causes of cancer and what should be done to try to compensate for them?

What causes cancer?

Now it seems clear that no one has the answer to this question. The doctor responded to this question by explaining the mechanism of abnormal cell proliferation. They responded by explaining how but not why. “The factors or multiple causes,” says the most. But the reality is that every oncologist can answer that question satisfactorily.

To answer this question, I think, must be placed a little further. We must move away from the microscope to see clearly what was really sick, a person, not a cell. Someone with a life. A life that is probably what causes the disease. Life, perhaps sickly.

But let’s start from the beginning. Someone with a certain personality you live a certain life. Suddenly, one day you feel something is wrong and see a doctor. This makes a series of tests and concluded that this person has developed a disease called “cancer.” Person, this personality, and with life, has been produced in the body of cancer. There have been infected by a virus, or have an accident, or suffering from something innate, your body only has to send commands to a group of cells to multiply at an abnormal level and not die, thus creating what is called a “tumor. In turn, these tumors will nurture and grow without limit of time, destroying cells and even send a few cells elsewhere in the body, resulting in what is called “metastasis”. In short, the body, by itself, has started the process of self destruction. Because it is precisely what cancer, the process of self destruction.

Some Cancer-Causing Infection

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Some Cancer-Causing Infection40 percent of cancers can be prevented and 20 per cent is associated with viral or bacterial infection that can cause stomach cancer, uterine or liver disease, said today in the Spanish oncology expert at the World Cancer Day night.
Director of the Master Plan of Oncology in Barcelona, Josep Maria Borras said that 40 percent of all cancers could be prevented by vaccines, changes in lifestyle and diet, and lead a healthy lifestyle.
In a press conference on the next occasion of the World Day against Cancer, Borras showed that survival has increased over the years and have reduced the possibility of death from cancer thanks to new treatment, which also improve the quality of life of patients.
For this expert, one big improvement from the last 15 years has found that some types of cancer associated with infection, and provide a potential vaccine for prevention and care, such as Helicobacter pylori (HP).
Head of nutrition and cancer unit of the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO), Carlos Alberto Gonzalez said about HP is a bacteria associated with peptic ulcer and gastric lymphoma. (more…)

cancer risk factors

The word cancer is common among all, especially if we speak in relation to food, there are still many myths about the causes that cause it.

Each cancer patient is special, but look broadly common risk factors that recur in most cases:

  • Aging: While children, teens and adults can suffer, it is common that after 65 years of age becomes a risk factor.
  • The snuff: people who smoke are more likely to develop some form of cancer, besides being a habit that can be avoided.
  • The sun’s rays: ultraviolet radiation, both the Sun and from tanning beds, cause premature aging and skin damage. We recommend sun exposure in moderation and at convenient times after the 17 pm or before 11 pm.
