A substance produced in the body when you eat broccoli and brussels sprouts may curb the proliferation of cancer cells and could be an effective supplement for treating some cancers and other diseases, according to a study.
The study, developed teams Ohio State University and the Research Institute Richard J. U.S. Solove, was published in the journal Cancer Prevention Reaserch.
The researchers found that the substance (indole-3-carbinol “or I3C) is related to a molecule (Cdc25A), which is essential for proliferation and cell division.

In particular, the I3C can destroy the Cdc25A, which is also a molecule that is present in high levels in breast, prostate, liver, esophagus, endometrium, and colon, and other diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
“A better understanding of this mechanism can lead to the use of a dietary supplement (of the substance) as a safe and effective strategy to treat a variety of cancers and other diseases,” said the author who led the work, Xianghong Zou.
The study, based on several experiments on breast cancer cells showed that the substance caused the destruction of the molecule, indicating the specific location that served as a target for the substance to end the molecule.
In addition, they concluded that if the location is altered by genetic mutation, IC3 can no longer destroy the molecule.
However, other tests showed that the substance itself which was reduced tumor size by 65% when administered orally to mice.
